A few years back, I was looking for inspiration to create a new kindergarten lesson on showing respect when I came across Laurie Keller's Do Unto Otters: A Book About Manners. There are few books that truly fit my personality, and this is definitely one of them. I am not a sing-songy counselor, and frankly, DUSO makes me want to cry. This is not one of those stories. Do Unto Otters is a funny story about a rabbit who gets new neighbors, and they happen to be a bunch of otters. The rabbit goes over how he wants his new neighbors to act. I get to use different voices while reading silly things, and the kids love it.
In the past, I have simply read the book and had a discussion, but this year, I decided to create a worksheet for the kids. They draw a picture of a way they show respect/mind their manners. I encourage the kids to try and write a sentence of what they are doing, but I will also write down what's happening in the picture for those who need help.
